At Keychain SA, we’re passionate about women’s safety and are thrilled to announce our partnership with property giant Balwin Properties. Together, in collaboration with the Balwin Foundation and Balwin Sport, we are rolling out free self-defense classes for female residents, equipping them with essential, life-saving skills and techniques to help them feel more confident and secure in their everyday lives.
A Month of Safety and Awareness Against GBV
With a proactive approach to combatting Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Keychain SA and Balwin are going above and beyond during this November’s 16 Days of Activism by dedicating the entire month to safety and awareness. Together, we’re bringing 13 self-defense classes to Balwin communities in Johannesburg and Pretoria, focusing on vital personal safety techniques and situational awareness.
These classes aren’t only about physical skills; they’re about building mental preparedness, increasing situational awareness, and empowering women with confidence. The sessions are tailored to help participants respond effectively if they ever feel unsafe when alone, whether at home, commuting, or going about their daily routines.
Upcoming Classes in November – Open to Balwin Residents and Beyond
This initiative aims to ensure all residents have access to potentially life-saving knowledge and skills. For residents who want to bring friends or family, many sessions are open to guests. Key upcoming classes include:
• November 2nd at The Reid and Greenlee locations in Sandton Johannesburg
• November 10th at Thaba Eco Village Location Mulbarton Johannesburg– open to the public
These are just the first of many classes designed to foster a safe community within Balwin’s residential spaces. Our pilot project also explores the potential of expanding next year to invite the broader public, allowing even more women to access these empowering resources.
Balwin’s Commitment to Safety and Community Empowerment
The turnout for our first free class was remarkable, with over 80 ladies attending. This event underscored the need for accessible self-defense training and validated our mission to empower every woman with essential self-defense skills. Balwin Properties’ support demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering safe, supportive communities. This partnership highlights a shared goal: making self-defence knowledge widely available to those who may benefit most.
